The new website is up and running! I will make one or two tweaks over the next few weeks but this will be replacing katwhelan.com. If you want to keep up to date on what we're doing please follow us on facebook or instagram!
Any of you that follow me on Instagram or read our blog Shoestring-Lifestyle will know that over the last 8 months we have been building a rather large garage/workshop/studio in our garden. The idea has been to try to give my husband Rich (who's also an Illustrator) and I a better work/life balance, so that we could move the studio out of our little cottage and give us a dedicated space from which to continue working.
The new studio is nearing completion and although we have a lot of work still to do on that new budiling and on the old space freed up in the house, now feels like a good time to make a few changes. I been working at a greeting card illustrator/designer since I left university first as an in-house artist then as a freelancer selling direct to the public, thats nearly 15 years in total! (How am I old enough for it to have been that long?!?!)
For the last year I've been getting increasingly frustrated with limiting myself to one design style so I've taken the rather rash decision to stop selling my cards, circuses and theatres in my online shop, basically its not making me happy anymore and life is to short to do something I have luke warm feelings about. My notonthehighstreet shop will stay open for now but with only my lino prints for sale, I hope to continue working in lino and print going forward.
Im not quite sure what I'll do next but I would really like to go back to something with a sculptural element, which was where I originally started back in collage. My lovely husband is hoping to finish fitting out a separate small workshop shed for me to be able to go and make a mess in and find out where I go next.
We have also taken the decision to official join forces creatively, although we have worked in the same space for years we have always work as two very separate artists however with the new studio space nearly finished it makes more sense for us to work together. I will contiune to take on book, website and logo design work so please get in touch if you should want to commission anything, we are hoping to get out new website Whelan Jones Designs up and running soon, there is a facebook page which I would love for any of you to follow (theres not much on it yet but give me chance!) and you can also always follow me over on instagram. This website will be taken down in the next few months as I don't feel it represents me anymore, but please do follow us on social media, we have some new ideas planned and I will do my best to post more regularly than I have on here!
Thanks to all the lovely people who have visited this page regularly and bought my work from me, I hope you'll like whatever I come up with next x
I've got a new festive lino print on sale in my shop right now, as you can see I'm sticking with the Polar Bear theme this year!
Im really happy with how this came out, its handprinted by me on lovely thick handmade paper. These are limited edition so orders your now!
Yep my Wintery Polar Bears are finally live on my Notonthehighstreet shop! There are only a lmited run of 8 so once they have all found new homes thats it!
Get yours while you can!
Doing any kind of christmas stuff in the middle of summer always feel slightly weird, especially as Im usually sitting around in short sleeves wishing I was in the garden rather than at my desk! Anyway, despite the distractions of my garden I have finished designing this years new limited edition winter art toy. Heres a few in progress pics...
Once I make the first rough mock up (usually hand inked onto scrap fabric and roughly stiched together) I do the final art then scan and send off to the ever wonderful Zoe & Solii at Befab, these lovely ladies always do an amazing job of printing my watercolours onto fabric, I can't say enough good stuff about their service check out their website (plus they always send me a happy little handwritten note in with each batch of printing, sooo lovely!)
And here he is, my Wintery Pola Bear art toy complete with his own hand knitted red wool scarf!
As I have done with the Golden Reindeer before, these will only be made in an extremely limited run so once they are gone they are gone, he will go on sale around September for those of you who are super organised about your christmas shopping (unlike me!).
So these little guys where slightly delayed in going up in my shop as we went away to Cornwall for a week which through my schedule out a bit! However they are all stuffed and stitched together and available now on my Notonthehighstreet shop.
I really hope these little guys find some new homes, they are super cute and Im so pleased with how they came out. As ever they are limited edition, so once they are gone they are gone!
I really love puffins, they have so much personality for a little bird. The few puffin designs I've done recently have sold really well so I decided to try a new soft art version. I always make a rough dummy one to check Im happy with the design and size. I then paint up a watercolour version for printing onto fabric.
I had the design digital printed onto cotton by the lovely Zoe & Solii at BeFab, they print all my Flying Hares and Reindeer and produce just the best quailty printing in small runs, perfect for designer only producing a limited number of items.
Once I get the meter of fabric back I spend a happy afternoon cutting and pinning all the pieces, then I sew them together on my hand cranked 100 year old Singer, in this case outside while the sun shines!
Then I stuff them and stitch them all together! Job done!
Im making a limited run of 10 of these little guys, they will be up for sale on my shop at the beginning of June so keep an eye out for them, I think they go fast!
